Celebrities, for the most part, stand the test of time. Once they become stars, they remain stars until the day they die and even beyond. But there is another type of celebrity. This kind is known as the “fleeting celebrity”. They are said to have their “15 minutes of fame”, which was a phrase coined by the late Andy Warhol. Our culture has seen a number of these 15 minute wonders. We’re going to take a look at just a few of them here.

Then there was the big scandal in the late 80s involving Jim Bakker, who began the Praise The Lord Ministry in Fort Hill, South Carolina in 1974. A big sex scandal and some shady business dealings involving the PTL landed Bakker in prison for 45 years. Most people today don’t even give him a second thought.

In the world of music, a guy by the name of Carl Douglas gave us the totally ridiculous song “Kung Fu Fighting”. While Douglas may have been yesterday’s news after that song mercifully fell off the charts, the song itself has been in more Kung Fu movies than you can possibly imagine.

And then of course there was the novelty song of the 90s, “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred. These bald headed brothers probably grew hair after this total embarrassment of a song. Neither one of them has been heard from since and the song only gets played as a parody.

Here we are going to look at 10 ways to fail that audition! Whatever format your audition takes, you can probably adapt the general idea of these pointers quite nicely so you can be sure of failing every time. Alternatively, ignore our advice, get that place in drama school and ‘break a leg’ as they say!

 

 

1. Be late. We really love this. After years checking dates, train timetables, getting “the one before the one before” and paying for taxis we can’t afford, you’re late. Bingo!

2. Wear inappropriate clothing. If you’re going to a dance audition, remember to wrap up warmly and wear sensible outdoor shoes. On no account forget to forget you tap shoes.

3. Leave your music on the train/bus/sofa at home. The accompanist knows every song that’s ever been written by heart and he/she’ll love you for the chance to show off.

4. Be staggeringly under-prepared. Dry in the middle of your monologue. When asked about the context of your monologue, reply: “What’s a monologue?”.

5. Look the audition panel straight in the eye at all times. You’ll be surprised how much we like this and you’ll find we may be so overwhelmed that we start looking anywhere except at you. Well done!

6.Bring lots of props for your song/monologue (count on at least five minutes’ setting-up time). If you can think of a really wacky original approach that we’ll never have seen before ( eg Shakespeare in mime under a blanket…), so much the better.

7. If you’re a girl, put on a “sexy” voice and flirt with the panel. Lick your lips a bit. Mmm, works every time…

If you’re a boy, act all  cute and go for the “mother” vote from the women on the panel - we’re so weak and inexperienced, we’ll go for it!

8. When asked about the last show/play you saw, be honest and tell them you don’t go to the theatre much. I mean, what’s the point?

9. Be rude to the receptionist, to the student ushers and above all to the accompanist. Really show them who’s boss.

10. At the end of the audition, smile brightly and say “See you in September, then!”.

Previous reports revealed that professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy of Dancing with the Stars wasn’t happy after failing to bag the huge mirror ball trophy with partner Spice Girl Melanie Brown in the last season of the celebrity dance competition. He was understandably disappointed, and his comments following the final show indicated that he wanted to move to greener pastures. Now, after all the tension of the competition has gone, it seems like the 27-year-old dancer has changed his mind.

Chmerkovskiy revealed that he was just tired from the competition, having spent two seasons, roughly six months, away from his home in Edgewater , New Jersey , and thus is feeling very homesick.

“Being away from home for so long was taking its toll,” Chmerkovskiy said in a conversation with TV Guide. “I’m one of those people who get very homesick and needs to recharge the batteries. I’ve missed all the Hanukkah parties and all the dinners. I haven’t seen my family in four months.”

The tension of the competition was even heightened as he had to work with Melanie Brown’s tight schedule, due to the various activities she needed to do regarding the Spice Girls’ reunion tour.

Chmerkovskiy realized the impact of his previous statements, and he seemed to be sorry that he blurted them out.

“I was like, ‘ah… what have I said?’ It was very tear-jerky for me…I’m honored to be part of this show, and the most important thing is the promotion of ballroom dance,” he said. “When I had a free moment, I read all the e-mails and looked at my fan site and people were just devastated, to say the least. I didn’t mean to do that.”

Moreover, Chmerkovskiy realized that he does have fans, avid supporters who were very disappointed to hear that he wanted to leave the dance competition.

“I never had fans outside of my family. People were tuning in to see what I was going to do next, and that, to me, is mind-boggling,” he confessed. “I’m not used to that kind of attention. In our ballroom world, we don’t have fans like that. But a lot of people, when they found out that I was supposedly quitting the show, there was a ridiculous amount of support.”

Finally, he said something that would be a huge relief to his fans. Chmerkovskiy said, “Dancing with the Stars opened up all the doors and all the opportunities…I don’t want to change anything about it.”

He’s also one of the most popular in both comics and worldwide as viewed by the general public. He represents truth, justice, righteousness and morality. And while many find it hard to relate to him, those same people look up to his characteristics and admire his altruistic spirit.

Batman - Not quite so altruistic, but every bit as popular and loved is the Dark Knight. He may not always do the right thing, or do it the right way, but his motives are always pure, and his intent is always clear. He’s a thinking man’s hero, but he’s also a warrior’s hero. He’s well rounded and complete, and a little bit gritty, and that’s why we like him.

Spider-Man - The boy next door; the everyman; the geeky kid a great majority of us can relate to who overcomes the odds and becomes something great. Spider-Man gives us hope that we can achieve that same greatness in our own special ways. He truly is a standard bearer and a true hero to the core, always trying to do the right thing, but many times messing it up horribly, thus proving he’s still human, and thus endearing him more and more to our hearts.

Lex Luthor - The arch-nemesis of the ‘Blue Boyscout’, Superman, Lex Luthor is all kinds of evil wrapped up in money and a well pressed, expensive suit. He’s diabolically clever and vicious, and he never lets Supes sleep on the job. Cementing his legacy as one of the greatest villains of all time, Luthor wins our allegiance for the depth of his character and his driven purpose.

Captain America - Maybe not as popular in modern times as he was in the days of World War II when he first appeared on the comic scene, but still a symbol of America and classic comics from the Golden and Silver ages. Captain America is displaced and so he views the world a bit differently than the rest of us. He sees things the way they should be in his mind, which isn’t always the most popular point of view. He’s often portrayed as a boy scout, but truthfully he’s much deeper than that, and that’s where the appeal lies.

Wolverine - Overused or not, Logan is one of the most popular comic book characters in existence today. When he first burst onto the scene in the revitalized X-Men he quickly gained an everlasting fan base because of the difference he brought to the table. He’s not your typical do-gooder hero, though he always does fight for the right causes. He’s temperamental, at times insecure, rude, crude and unpredictable. He’s a loner with a heart of gold and a penchant for violence. He’s an anti-hero who takes no crap, but at the same time he deeply cares about those he surrounds himself with. And it’s those complexities that make him stand out in our minds.

Wonder Woman - The first widely received female superhero, Wonder Woman is by far the most popular female comic book character to date. She comes from a world where women are dominant, which gained her popularity early on in the women’s liberation movement. She stands head-to-head and toe-to-toe with any male superhero, and she shows them up oftentimes. She’s a strong, beautiful, intelligent and yet still feminine heroine with a costume that has become more than iconic.

The Joker - The thorn in Batman’s side rightly deserves a place on this list for his epic battles with the ‘Caped Crusader’. Of all comic book characters in the superhero realm, there is none quite like the Joker. He’s maniacal, insane, and ruthless, yet charming, smooth and debonair at the same time. He’s a mass murderer and a child killer, and he’s obsessed with Batman. He’s just too crazy not to love!

The Flash - If underoos and t-shirts are any indication, The Flash is one of the most noticeable and popular iconic comic book characters of all time. He’s a fan-favorite of comic readers and non-comic fans alike. He’s known worldwide and his trademark red costume with the white circle and yellow lightning bolt are instantly recognized. But more than appearance, it’s his powers and his wit that land him on this list. He’s one of the original comic relief superheroes in the genre with his sarcastic and humorous banter that rivals that of Spider-Man. And who doesn’t love super speed powers? He’s the best at what he does.

The Incredible Hulk - Mr. Green Genes himself has to make this list merely for his iconic status in the world of comics and beyond. He’s a classic hero that has gained notoriety through comics, television and film. And with the popularity of the second Hulk film that just released, his star will only continue to rise. Couple that with the massive success of Planet Hulk and the Incredible one is a force to be reckoned with. Whether it’s his intense power, or the dynamic between that power and the weak, but intelligent alter-ego Bruce Banner, we love him no matter what.

There are many other comic book characters that could have easily made this list, like Magneto, Iron Man, Robin, Green Lantern, Professor X and so many others. The names represented above, though, are undoubtedly some of the greatest comic book characters ever created.

She also had acting roles in “Cadillac Records” and “Obsessed” the later opening this month. And if that wasn’t enough she earned a remarkable $80 million helping make her the number one Cash Couples in Entertainment along with hubby Jay-Z. Speaking of Jay-Z she finally married her Roc earlier in 2008.

#7 Lil Wayne (Rapper/Producer)

 

2008 was Lil Wayne’s Year. He released his “Tha Carter III” which sold 1 million copies in 1 week. A fete that hasn’t been done since 50 Cents did it in 2005. Lil Wayne was everywhere and everyone wanted Lil Wayne. If he wasn’t performing or appearing at award shows he was being featured on everyone’s singles from T.I. to T-Pain. His hit singles Lollipop, Got Money and A Million were billboard mainstays.

 #6 Jay-Z (Rapper/Mogul)

 

Jay has become one of the most financially successful hip-hop artist and mogul in America. He signed the biggest contract ever with Live Nation worth $150 million. He co-owns 40/40 club, The New Jersey Nets and still heads of Roca wear clothing line. He sells out concerts in 30 minutes, which is unheard of and wed the hottest girl in the game, Beyonce April of 2008. And to top things off he was the highest paid musician of 2008 bringing in over $82 million.

# 5 Michelle Obama (New First Lady/Lawyer/Wife/Mother)

 

She is an attorney, smart, fashion forward, a mom and wife to President-Elect Barack Obama. Michelle Obama will make history along side her husband when she becomes this countries first African American First Lady. She is Barack’s greatest asset and everyone predicts she will be a great First Lady. She has already done a good job raising her two daughters Malia and Sasha with Barack. Family is first and foremost. She is extremely close to her mom and her brother who is the men’s basketball coach at Oregon State University. In July of 2008, Michelle became an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. The Chicago native will soon call the White House home.

 #4 Tyler Perry (Producer/Director/Actor/Studio Head) 

 

Tyler Perry wasn’t content to just sit back and make plays and movies. He got into television, developing the hit show “The House of Payne” which is a cable success. So hoping to strike gold twice in 2008 he went back to television to produce the series “Meet the Browns” which will premiere in 2009. His most impressive and historic move to date though was the launch of his motion picture studios located in Atlanta! Perry became the first Black to ever open and own a movie studio and lot. Tyler Perry Studios will develop all of Tyler’s projects and rent out space for other projects. Within months of opening the studio has employed over 200 employees.

 #3 Oprah (Studio Head/Publisher/Television Host/Actresses/School Matron)

 

She is simply Oprah. However there is nothing simple about her. She is arguably the most influential woman in the world. When she speaks the World listens. In 2008 Oprah brought in over $385 million with the help of her “Oprah Winfrey Show”, Harpo Studios, Oxygen Channel, her magazine O, her radio program and more. She is a philanthropist and raised her game by opening a school for girls in South Africa. She is credited for being the first Black Billionaire with her net worth estimated at 2.7 billion. She is at the top of everyone’s list. 

 #2 Will Smith (Actor/Producer)

 

Will Smith has become the #1 movie star in America surpassing even his buddy Tom Cruise. He is box office gold and in 2008 could do no wrong. Will made box office history by becoming the 1st actor to have count them eight consecutive movies hitting the $100 million mark. No small fete by Hollywood standards. He appeals to everyone and everyone loves Will Smith. Not one to sit on his success Will founded Overbrook Entertainment a production company that produces movies, music and television programs. In 2008 alone Overbrook Entertainment released the following hits The Human Contract, Lakeview Terrace, The Secret Lives of Bees, Hancock and Seven Pounds currently in theaters. Will is not only handsome and charming he is smart. Will makes $20 million per picture and also takes home a percentage of the box office receipts on the backend. Now that is a man who knows how to work it!

 #1 Barack Obama (44th President Elect)

 

Not many people beat out the likes of Oprah and Will Smith on year-end polls but one man did, President-Elect Barack Obama. With a simple phrase of hope he changed the course of America and brought inspiration to America and Countries abroad.  No one man brought so many people together and gave a nation a reason to hope and dream again in a country struggling through a recession and slipping in it’s international popularity.  “Yes We Can” became a theme of hope for millions and on November 3rd, 2008 “Yes We Can” became “Yes We Did”! President-Elect, Barack Obama is our Top Person of 2008 and soon our 1st ever-Black President as well as our 44th President of the United States of America!

There are those rare artists among us who are destined to mature, to blossom and to grow.

Through some kind of metamorphosis as is the case in Cady McClain’s ever evolving transformation. It is as though her gifts and abilities continue to fine tune themselves and this allows Cady to constantly improve as an artist and a person.

This marvel occurs every time Cady looks within herself as she finds different ways to reach out to us us and touch us all with her wonder and beauty of her self, her music and her acting.

Cady McClain describes herself as a woman who is ‘curvy,’ ’soft’ and a ‘great ‘dancer.’ Cady admits that people have also told her that she looks a little like Jody Foster but with curves.

She was voted one of Daytime’s soap operas, ‘most beautiful women.’ Cady also thinks of herself as an actor, writer and musician.

Her father was of Irish and Mexican descent who left her when she was 12. Her mother is of Swiss and German descent who ”gave me my creativity since she was an artist and taught me all about art,” she says.

Cady was born in Burbank California and raised in Laguna Nagel, California. She also spends time in New York City especially now since she currently stars as Dixie on ‘All My Children.’ This is a recurring role for her and she has now been back on the daytime show for the past six months.

Even when she was 9 years old, Cady McClain had the look to sell most products. She began her career as one of the ’stick on us’ Band Aid kids and quickly learned that she could get almost anything she wanted from those who would pick or use her to sell their products.

”There was a price, however,’’she says, ”I was a product and not just a little kid anymore” and Cady soon learned how to sell herself.

As a young teenager growing up in the ’80’s Cady was working regularly and she was getting checks in the amount of $5-10,000 each.

”Which to me was a lot of money. I used that money to help my family.” Cady says.(her mom was ill and Cady was very supportive to the person she loved the most in the world back then.)

Cady’s acting ability steadily improved and in no time she was awarded with two Emmy’s. One for her role as ”Dixie, the little girl in ”All my Children, back in the 90’s.

She also received an Emmy as Rosanna Cabot, the rich, beautiful bitch in, ”As the World Turns,” in 2003.

”Dreams come true by listening to the little voices from within and believing in yourself,” Cady says. When her mother passed away when she was 25 ”I found my inner strength due to having to live with death because my mother was ill for a long period of time.”

Cady has been writing music since her early twenties and through the support of friends and loved ones continues to write music that Cady hopes will soon inspire us all.

Since ‘93 Cady has been performing in clubs in New Orleans and recently was involved in assisting artists who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina so they could earn a little money by playing in New York clubs and venues.

”Writing songs are like writing a poem,” Cady says, ‘’songs are rhythmic stories, some songs are like prayers. I tell truths inside of riddles,” she reveals.

She is most inspired and influenced by the music, she admits of Grammy winner, Shawn Covin, who has been an early influence and whose music she just adores.

Cady has recently teamed up with, Emily Lazar who is best known for her outstanding mastering, editing and studio work. Emily has also worked with David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Madonna.

Emily is now an admirer of Cady’s and she has assisted her on Cady’s first CD, entitled ‘Blue Glitter Fish’ which is a compilation of Cady’s own songs. This CD has eleven songs on it including a hidden track at the end.

George Walker Petit who she met through friends is now her producer and has worked closely with her on her new CD. He says, ”her music is heart wrenchingly beautiful.”

The songs on her CD include ”Silence,” which is a love song, and ”My Guitar” which is a heavy rock song, and ‘Dreamer,’ which is a dark dance tune which could be used in a seedy bar or strip club.

‘It is about a guy who can’t move forward and or a song about those of us who go to places to lick our wounds, and I feel for people like that,” Cady says.

Her new album, Blue Glitter Fish also has her favorite, ‘Africa,’ which is a song which is evocative of the mystery that is Africa. ‘We all have our Africa’s inside of us which include the mysterious, dark and unexplored.”

Larry Flick from Sirius Satellite Radio is a big fan of Cady’s musical talents and he just interviewed her on his radio show and played some of her latest songs to the delight of Cady and already she has caught the attention of many more new music fans who were listening to her music and interview.

One cannot wonder at the beauty and essence of this remarkable and talented woman, especially when she says things like, ”I have learned to forgive and I have learned to appreciate all that is beauty and the humbling quality of love and being in love and making creative and harmonious music.”
